BLAVITY: This Black-Owned Nonprofit On Track to Deliver 1 Million Pounds of Food to Chicago’s Underserved Communities: ‘Access to Healthy Food Is a Human Right’

Metropolitan cities are experiencing instances of food insecurity at an alarming rate, and Black communities are being hit the hardest. In 2022, Feeding America reported that “1 in 5 Black people” or “nearly 23% of Black people in the United States experienced food insecurity.” This finding was almost “two-and-a-half times the rate of white people.”

Fox 32 Cupcake for a Cause

Dion’s Chicago Dream and Vanille Patisserie are partnering to raise money to support those struggling with food insecurity in Chicago. For the month of August proceeds from cupcakes at Vanille in Lincoln Park will go toward the nonprofit group.

The ADA Teams Up with Dion’s Chicago Dream

ARLINGTON, Va., Sept. 29, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The American Diabetes Association® (ADA) and Dion’s Chicago Dream have teamed up to provide healthy fruits and vegetables to Chicago families in the south side of Chicago. With over 3 million people living in Illinois, 34 percent having pre-diabetes and nearly 1 million people living with diabetes, this innovative way of thinking will allow more people to adopt a healthy way of eating.

Fox 32 Chicago Announces New Milestone Achieved

Nonprofit Dion’s Chicago Dream achieves new milestone. A dream is coming true for a Chicago nonprofit. Dion’s Chicago Dream reached a new milestone, delivering 15,000 pounds of food each month to local families who need it. This organization has grown from one community fridge in Englewood to now feeding 2,000 residents a month.

Dion Dawson Receives Prestigious Fellowship

Since 1987, Echoing Green has accelerated the work of some of the world’s best and brightest social innovators. WTTW Features Dream Fridge Program Efforts

Every weekday morning, Dion Dawson fills an outdoor refrigerator in Englewood with water bottles and produce. The free offerings include fresh tomatoes, grapes, apples, berries, citrus fruits, and lettuce…“Englewood is a food desert. There’s no supermarket within a mile radius besides a Whole Foods,” Dawson said.

The Dream Fridge aims to address that.
