A Chicago man’s passion for finding a solution to food insecurity has caught the attention of the American Diabetes Association, and his non-profit is making an even bigger difference in people’s lives.
ARLINGTON, Va., Sept. 29, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The American Diabetes Association® (ADA) and Dion’s Chicago Dream have teamed up to provide healthy fruits and vegetables to Chicago families in the south side of Chicago. With over 3 million people living in Illinois, 34 percent having pre-diabetes and nearly 1 million people living with diabetes, this innovative way of thinking will allow more people to adopt a healthy way of eating.

Dion’s Chicago Dream reached a new milestone, delivering 15,000 pounds of food each month to local families who need it. This organization has grown from one community fridge in Englewood to now feeding 2,000 residents a month.
Since 1987, Echoing Green has accelerated the work of some of the world’s best and brightest social innovators. This Fellowship cohort will be the first of two for the year, with each Fellow receiving $80,000 over 18 months, a community of practice, and a continuum of support valued at $200,000 per Fellow, including leadership development, wellness programming, and access to a network of industry peers.

Every weekday morning, Dion Dawson fills an outdoor refrigerator in Englewood with water bottles and produce. The free offerings include fresh tomatoes, grapes, apples, berries, citrus fruits, and lettuce…“Englewood is a food desert. There’s no supermarket within a mile radius besides a Whole Foods,” Dawson said.
The Dream Fridge aims to address that.
